Music comes in countless forms. From passionately romantic compositions to the chaotic textures of contemporary noise, its diversity is endless. Yet, among these, the type of music created with a clear spiritual or religious purpose seems to resonate most deeply when it is “used” for that very purpose.
Why does this feel so fulfilling? It’s because such music conveys essential, universal truths about life—messages that can only be communicated with the transparency and depth that music uniquely offers. These moments of connection, when the music aligns perfectly with its purpose, make it clear that music is not just an art form but an irreplaceable medium for conveying profound meaning.
Last Sunday, I experienced such a moment while performing music in its purest form: as an act of prayer. It was a deeply enriching experience, enhanced by the company of remarkable fellow musicians. Together, we explored centuries-old handwritten scores and brought them to life. For me, it was a first—playing continuo on a harpsichord. The performance itself was offered as a spiritual “offering,” giving it a profound sense of purpose.
Reflecting on these moments, I feel truly fortunate to have shared in this rare blend of tradition, creativity, and purpose. It’s these experiences that remind me of the true power and beauty of music.
